What makes a good book?

Just like baking cake requires specific ingredients in order for it to not only come out right but also taste delicious, a book needs just the right ingredients to make it good.

Simply, a good book should have:

  • An ageless appeal

A good book is one that individuals of any age can enjoy. It does not limit itself to one demographic but is open to the appreciation of anyone that chooses to read it

  • A relatable plot

When you read a book you want the story to be something that you can connect to. The experiences described should not be farfetched and unbelievable but real-world and engaging.

Plots that describe the journey to adulthood are especially good because we have all at some point had conflicts with our parents, wanted to run away from home, experimented with things we were told were forbidden, and rebelled in some way or the other. It was through these experiences that we discovered our parents were right or wrong. Some of us have even discovered the skeletons hidden our families’ closets — fortunately, or unfortunately.

  • Simple language

The art of simple language can’t be overstated. A reader must understand what the author is saying in order to enjoy the story. Most of us speak in simple language, so if the book is written simply, it’s more impactful. Nobody likes to read words that are flying over their heads.

  • Beautiful imagery

Books have long been an escape for many individuals. Through the pages, you are transported to many different places and connect with the experiences of the characters. A good book helps you to see what the characters see and feel what they feel. If a character is having a thrilling adventure in Africa, narrowly escaping danger or involved in car chases, the reader should feel as if they are right there experiencing the same thing.

Many people only experience the scenery of other countries through the pages of books. For others that are feeling the squeeze of the global travel restrictions that have kept us from visiting our favorite places, experiencing the sites through books is looking like a pretty good option.

  • Suspense

If you pick up a book and can already guess how it’s going to end, it’s not a good book. As a reader, you should have nail-biting moments when you’re wondering what will happen next. You should be trying to figure out the ending and reading on to see if you’re predictions are correct.

Reading is an age-old pastime that will never go out of style. So grab a good book, put your feet up, and let the pages take you to places you have never been!
